Education: A team from the gymnasium Benedetti from Venice will represent Italy in the annual competition of human powered vehicles

From Venice to NASA for the Moonbuggy Race

Venice (Italy) – Summing their ages we won’t count more then 90.But from the 3rd to the 17th of April they will represent Italy at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Five students, four boys and a girl, from the gymnasium Benedetti got into the competitors list of the NASA Great Moonbuggy Race, just in time. A Moonbuggy is a human powered vehicle similar the lunar rover used by the astronauts during the 70s on the moon, just to be clear. They will join other two teams, which have raced already, one Russian and one Indian and participate to the race on the 13th and 14th April. “The students were selected from the International Space Education Institute of Leipzig during a workshop in February, when they went to Germany, as guests of the German institute, and there they tried the Moonbuggy and visited some company very technologically advanced”, said Professor Forieri vice director and coordinator for the project. More than one thousand students from more than 20 countries will participate to the race by their self-built Moonbuggy. “This year our students got into the project at the end of it and couldn’t build their own buggy, but from the next year we would like to make part of the project also some universities of our region for the design part and some technical schools for the construction, to build a complete Italian team”, added Prof. Forieri. In the meantime, Laura Martin, Simon Galletti, Daniele Cini, Giacomo Labbri and Marco De Lorenzi will bring a little bit of Italy in Alabama for the Race 2012. “ We will help to build the two parts designed by our team mates and then we will trainee. Probably I will be co-pilot in the Russian team”, said Laura, “This idea came suddenly, but we are living it as an opportunity to see how things go in such a big associations”. The idea is to bring the next competition in Venice, maybe during the Venice Marathon.
